Holland to end Afghan invasion role as promised

Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, whose cabinet collapsed early on Saturday over the duration of its Afghan invasion role, said on Sunday he expected Dutch troops to leave Afghanistan as planned.

"If nothing else will take its place, then it ends," Balkenende told Dutch television of the plan to bring home the 2,000-strong Dutch contingent from Uruzgan province in August this year.

The government collapsed when Balkenende's Christian Democrats and their coalition partner, Labour, fell out over the timing of the Dutch force's withdrawal from Afghanistan.
