World's fourth-largest carmaker Hyundai will manufacture i20 model cars in its Turkey plant, company's top executive in Turkey said on Wednesday.

Kwang-Heum Um, CEO of Hyundai Assan, a joint venture between Hyundai Motors and Turkey's Kibar Holding, said that manufacturing of i20, a B-segment car, would begin in May 2010.

Kwang-Heum Um said Hyundai Assan would make an additional investment of 75 million USD to produce 80,000 i20 cars a year, 70,000 of which would be for export. The company said it would also employ 500 workers more for i20 production.

South Korean automaker opened its plant in Turkey in 1997. The plant builds Hyundai Accent and Matrix, an MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) in this plant.

Kwang-Heum Um said manufacturing of i20 cars would create an additional export revenues of 1 billion USD for Turkey annually.

Hyundai has unveiled its i20 hatchback at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. The model has been on sale in Europe and India since December 2008. Till June, Hyundai manufactured 73,000 units of i20 hatch and exported a little over 60,000 cars to Europe.

Turkey can make this car a test bid for new technologies: fuel efficiency, hybrid electric vehicle and solar power, perhaps work with European and Japanese partners.
