Iceland president asks Social Democrats to form govt
Iceland's President said he had given the mandate to form a new government to Social Democrat party leader.
Iceland's President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson said on Tuesday he had given the mandate to form a new government to Social Democrat party leader Ingibjorg Gisladottir and that she should hold talks with the Left-Greens to form a minority coalition.
"I have decided to ask the leaders of the Social Democratic Alliance and the Left-Green party to engage in conversation about forming a new minority government backed by the Progressive Party. Therefore, I give Ingibjorg Gisladottir the mandate to lead the talks," Grimsson told reporters at his residence.
Former Prime Minister Geir Haarde, leader of the Independence Party, tendered his resignation on Monday after talks to save his government failed.
