An official of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said that illegal workers found staying in the country after the end of the amnesty period would face a life ban, local newspaper Khaleej Times reported on Monday."

The illegal workers have now a golden chance to leave the country during the three-month amnesty period that would end on Sept. 2," Humaid bin Deemas, Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry ofLabor (MoL), was quoted as saying.

The UAE cabinet decided earlier that a period of three months from June 3 would be given to provide all expatriates present illegally in the UAE with an opportunity to regularize their situation according to the law, or to leave the country, without penalty.

The cabinet decision on amnesty also proposed strict punishments on violating employers after the amnesty period. "The illegal workers who want to leave the country should fill in the work permit cancellation form, get an acceptance letter from the MoL and go to the airport directly after booking their seat," another MoL Undersecretary Obaid Rashid Al Zahmi said. The UAE, with the second largest economy and the largest GDP per capita in the Arab world, employs several million foreign workers.
