By the beginning of 2009, people looked at and remembered the events of tlast year, 2008.

Kashmir is one of the territories which hope better year, remebering pain over civilian causalties.

Kashmiri Media Service reported that Indian troops killed 538 civilians during the year 2008, which included 24 killed in custody besides 12 women and 25 children.

According to the data complied by the Research Section of Kashmir Media Service, the occupation troops during their raids, firing and shelling injured 4,824 persons, destroyed 106 residential houses, arrested 1,408 civilians and molested 93 women. The killings rendered 85 women widowed and 164 children orphaned. Forty-four youth were reported missing in custody.

Indian troops killed six Kashmiri youth at two different places. Personnel of 22-Rashtriya Rifles during siege and search operation destroyed a residential house of one Abdul Aziz Lone at Botengo in Sopore.

Dead bodies of Bilal Ahmad Mala and Shahmim were recovered from the debris. Four youth were killed by the personnel of 39-Rashtriya Rifles at Bathidar in Mendhar area of Poonch. Earlier, two Indian troops including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), were killed in an attack in the same area.

The residents of Botanengo, Sopore said that the troops barged into the houses. People took to the streets and staged demonstrations against Indian troop's act.

Meanwhile, a fire broke out in 8-Assam Rifles camp at Kargil in Ladakh, damaging completely the army barrack including a library and a hall.
