Indonesia plans to buy six more Sukhoi fighter aircraft from Russia to add to the four Sukhois it has previously purchased to form a squadron, a Defense Ministry spokesman said.
Indonesia and Russia will soon sign a memorandum of agreement for the purchase of six Sukhoi SU-30 jets worth about 350 million U.S. dollars, Antara news agency on Wednesday quoted Defense Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Edy Butar Butar as saying.
"What is to be signed is a memorandum of agreement and not a purchase contract because the funds are not yet available," the spokesman said here Tuesday.
He said the government is now still seeking the funds for it. He could not tell when the purchase would really be done.
The plan was not part of the main military equipment procurement program through credits worth one billion U.S. dollars that had been offered by Russia.
He said the loan offered by Russia would be used partly for procurement of arms and avionics equipment for the four Sukhois Indonesia had bought namely two Sukhoi SU-27s and two Sukhoi MK-30s.
