Iran appoints new envoy to UN
Iran has appointed Mohammad Khazaei as its new envoy to the United Nations in the US city of New York, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said Sunday.

Khazaei, a former deputy economic minister, will replace Mohammad-Javad Zarif who has been at the UN for the last five years, the spokesman said.

As Iran and the United States have no diplomatic ties, the Iranian UN envoy acts as a de facto ambassador to the US and has therefore a strategic portfolio.

Hosseini added that just like Zarif, also Khazaei would continue Iran's policies at the UN.
