The officials say they have ordered senior officers to take a series of precautions. For instance, senior officers will no longer be allowed to bring their mobile phones into rooms where classified information is being discussed. That way, the listening stations won't be able to hear sensitive conversations that might be going on in the background while generals talk on their cellular phones.

The officials were speaking on condition of anonymity yesterday because they were not authorised to disclose information about defence operations.

The report came as the Israeli officials admitted for the first time that an air strike in Syria last year was aimed at a nuclear facility built with assistance from North Korea.
