Iran's Karoubi 'recognises Ahmadinejad's govt'

Senior Iranian opposition figure Mehdi Karoubi recognises President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as head of government, Karoubi's son was quoted as saying on Monday.

However, he still believes last year's election was "rigged".

It was the first time such a statement of recognition was attributed to Karoubi, who came fourth in June's disputed presidential election and who has continued to voice defiance over the conduct of the vote ever since.

But it was not immediately clear whether Karoubi had fundamentally changed his position on the election and its aftermath.

While Hossein Karoubi said his father recognised Ahmadinejad as "head of government", he did not use the term "head of the republic", the Iranian president's formal title, in a statement on the opposition website Sahamnews.

"Mr Karoubi said he still strongly insists on his belief that the election was rigged," Sahamnews reported Hossein Karoubi as saying.

However, he quoted his father as noting that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had endorsed the election result.

As Khamenei -- Iran's top authority -- had confirmed Ahmadinejad's presidency,

"I recognise him as the head of the government," he quoted Mehdi Karoubi as saying.

Sahamnews is the website of Karoubi's political party, Etemad-e Melli.
