Iraq fires Basra commander after crackdown
Iraq's government fired the commander of Iraqi military and police forces in the southern city of Basra on Wednesday, weeks after a crackdown on Mehdi army in the city that U.S. commanders say was poorly planned.

Lieutenant-General Mohan al-Furaiji is one of Iraq's most senior commanders and was highly regarded by his U.S. and British counterparts.

Defence Ministry spokesman Major-General Mohammed al-Askary said Furaiji's mission in Basra had come to an end and a new general had been placed in charge.
