From the 120 applicants around the world, only 35 companies and consortia, such as US oil major Exxon Mobil Corp., British giant BP Plc, were accepted, along with China's CNOOC, CNPC, Sinochem and Sinopec.

Four Japanese firms including nation's biggest Nippon Oil Corp were among 35 companies that qualified to bid in Iraq's first licensing round for oil and gas contracts, according to a list published by the Iraqi Oil Ministry, KUNA reported.

Inpex Holdings Inc, Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. and Mitsubishi Corp. also won rights to bid tenders to develop oil and gas fields.

Resource-poor Japan, which relies heavily on Middle East oil, is vital to secure energy supply sources in various regions.

Japan is world's third-biggest oil consumer after the US and China.
