Iraqi electoral commission head thanked Turkey on Thursday for its contributions to Iraq's provincial elections held at the weekend.

Faraj al-Haydari, chairman of Iraq's Independent High Election Commission, said that Turkey played an important part in preparations for elections.

Turkey trained officials of the Iraqi election commission, al-Haydari reminded and said, "Turkey acted earlier than most of the countries for extending a helpful hand in preparations for elections."

"Turkish Ambassador to Iraq expressed in person Turkey's intentions to help Iraq. We are grateful to that," he said.

Nearly 700 observers from around 25 countries, including Turkey, and international organizations, such as the United Nations, European Union and the Organization of the Islamic Conference, monitored Iraq's first provincial elections in four years.

Al-Haydari said provisional results of elections are expected to be made public later in the day, adding that final results are expected in two weeks.
