The U.S. "troop surge" in Iraq have boosted the number of detainees held in U.S. facilities in Iraq to roughly 23,000, up 5,000 from four months ago.
Army Col. Mark Martins, the top military lawyer in Iraq confirmed it to Wednesday's the Washington Post.
That number represents an all-time high since the U.S. occupation began in 2003.
Meanwhile, Iraqi forces during the "surge" have picked up 4,052more detainees, bringing the overall number of security detainees held in Iraqi prisons to 60,000.
