Israel expects 'clean image' with Haiti aid after deadly Gaza war

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday believes Haiti aid will bring image boost to Israel in international arena, in an image that was hit by a 22-day Gaza offensive that killed hundreds of Palestinians, particularly children.

Israeli PM attended a welcoming ceremony for the military medical team.

A UN report accuses Israel of war crimes during the deadly offensive. Israel launched on Dec. 27 a massive offensive in Gaza, killing more than 1434 Palestinians, a third of them children, and wounded more than 5000.

"Especially at a time when there are those plotting against us, distorting facts and slandering us, you showed the real face of the Israel Defence Forces," Reuters news agency quoted Netanyahu as saying at the airport.

Israeli military medical personnel arrived in Haiti after the 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck on Jan. 12 and army field hospital was set up.

You have raised "human spirits" and elevated the name of the State of Israel and the Israel Defence Forces, Netanyahu told the returning soldiers.

The report, which was compiled by a panel led by Richard Goldstone, had already been endorsed by the UN Human Rights Council, which sponsored the fact-finding commission.

The report concluded that Israel used disproportionate force in the war, deliberately targeting Gaza civilians, using them as human shields, and destroying civilian infrastructure.

Netanyahu recently refused to meet the demand of the international body, saying it will not conduct an independent probe of the Gaza war.

The UN report recommended that its conclusions be referred to the International Criminal Court prosecutor in The Hague if sides fail to carry out credible investigations within six months.

Israel killed 320 children plus twice that number of unarmed civilian non-combatants, in Gaza, just 12 months ago. The UN fact finding mission has accused Israel of war crimes.

Have they done something in Haiti that justifies that horrendous massacre, last year, and exonerates them from guilt?
