Israel could launch a broad-scale ground incursion inside the Gaza Strip this summer to destroy Hamas's infrastructure, The Jerusalem Post quoted unidentified sources in Jerusalem as saying.
According to the report, the incursion - similar to the West Bank attack in 2002 - would not take place until about a month or a month-and-a-half after US President George W. Bush's planned visit to Israel in mid-May.
They said the timing would also place the operation in the middle of summer and there was recognition that such an operation would be "extremely costly", both in terms of Israeli soldiers and Palestinians killed.
Israel would not remain inside Gaza, but instead would hand it over for administration to "either Egypt or a third party", according to the sources.
An Israeli official in the Prime Minister's Office "neither confirmed nor denied" major ground incursion in the Gaza Strip, saying only that we hold Hamas responsible for the situation in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli military strikes killed at least 20 Palestinians on Wednesday, mainly civilians, and three Israeli soldiers were killed.
