Israeli diplomat in Turkey flees after hitting woman
Israeli Vice Consul-General Mihal Gur-Aryeh, who hit a woman with his jeep on Jan. 2, will not face charges because of his diplomatic immunity, the woman's lawyer said yesterday.
Fatma Çıkın, a 63-year-old woman who works as a cleaning lady, was hit by Gur-Aryeh's car while she was crossing a junction where there were no traffic lights in İstanbul's Levent district. She was immediately taken to a hospital, and Gur-Aryeh fled the scene without even making a statement to police on the grounds that he has diplomatic immunity, according to Çıkın's lawyer, Nurdan Dinç.
Çıkın, who did not lose consciousness at the time of her hospitalization, said she raised her hand and asked the driver to stop but he ignored her and hit her. She sustained severe injuries and has undergone two surgeries. She is currently in critical condition. Çıkın's daughter, Reyhan, said she called Gur-Aryeh, who first spoke in Turkish and then in English and denied all charges. "He did not even express his wishes for my mother's recovery," she said.
