İstanbul to have a Congress Valley soon
A project launched by the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality that foresees the construction of a large "congress valley" in İstanbul's Harbiye district has been approved by the İstanbul 2nd Protection of Cultural and Natural Entities Council, İstanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş announced yesterday.

According to the project, modern congress and culture centers will be opened in the Harbiye neighborhood of the city. The project, drafted by İstanbul Metropolitan Planning Center experts, is expected to be finalized in March 2009 and the first event that is scheduled to take place in the valley will be the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meeting in October 2009.

According to the draft project, the entire construction of the congress valley will be conducted underground on an 83,700-square-meter area. The flow of traffic in the area will also be underground. The green sites in the area will be protected in compliance with technical reports. There will be around 1,000 offices, a 1,000-vehicle-capacity car park, technical rooms, simultaneous translation booths and cafeterias underground.
