Italian admiral elected as new NATO military head

NATO defense chiefs on Wednesday chose Italian Adm. Giampaolo Di Paola as head of the alliance's military committee, the senior military post.

Di Paola was voted in ahead of rivals from Spain and Poland. He will replace Canadian Gen. Ray Henault, who steps down in June after a three-year term.

Di Paola, who has been Italy's chief of defense for almost four years, will the second Italian to hold the post.
