An Italian delegation of businessmen, comprised of representatives of Brindisi Chamber of Trade, Puglia region and Brindisi Port Management, has arrived in Turkey on Monday to hold talks and sign a cooperation agreement with the Gebze Chamber of Trade.
Speaking at a press briefing held to provide information on the activities of the Italian business delegation, a regional minister from the Puglia region Lorenzo Cirasino said that the "Puglia region has comitted itself to cooperation with Mediterranean and Balkan countries. Such a fact has a direct impact on Brindisi."
"The Mediterranean will become an area of free trade in the year 2010. Countries in and around the Mediterranean would have a great role to play as of that year," Cirasino said.
"Brindisi has a population of 400,000. It has an airport as well as a seaport with three basins. Brindisi meets 17 percent of the energy requirements of Italy. The companies in our delegation wish to introduce themselves and provide information on investment opportunities in Brindisi," Cirasino said.
Director of International Relations and Projects at the Brindisi Chamber of Trade Guiseppe Marchionna said that they are working on a corridor to link Valencia to Istanbul.
"The cooperation agreement we would sign with the Gebze Chamber of Trade is aimed to establish a web between ports. We may be able to begin ferry trips between Brindisi and Gebze. We are not in Istanbul by coincidence. We plan a long term cooperation. We are working to facilitate passenger flights between Brindisi and Istanbul as of September," Marchionna said.
"Thanks to cooperation among the Mediterranean countries, Turkey would get closer to the European Union and make use of the resources of the union," Marchionna also said.
