Japan FM starts two-day visit to Turkey

Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada began a two-day visit to Turkey on Sunday to attend a ceremony marking the start of the Japan Year 2010 in Turkey.

Japan's Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada also visited the Marmaray sub-sea tunnel project in Istanbul, amid the sites of Japan's economic cooperation projects.



The tunnel project will provide transportation links between the citys Asian and European sides, beneath the Bosphorus Strait.

He is also expected to meet with his Turkish counterpart, Ahmet Davutoglu, and President Abdullah Gül during the visit.

The Foreign Ministry said Okada will attend the opening ceremony of the Japan Year 2010 in Turkey.

"He will have informal talks with people involved in organizing the Japan Year 2010 in Turkey and visit the sites of Japan's economic cooperation projects in İstanbul," the statement reads.

Japan Year 2010 in Turkey festivities will take place throughout the year.
