Kaczynski: Poland may block work on EU treaty
Poland's Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski on Tuesday repeated an earlier comment that his country may block work on the voting system in the European Union's draft treaty at this week's EU summit in Brussels.

'No matter who says what and how we are threatened - because unfortunately we are being threatened - nothing is certain,' Kaczynski told Polish Radio Tuesday.

Kaczynski said Poland would continue to push for a change in the voting system in the future treaty, a move which EU heavyweight states such as Germany have warned could cause chaos within the 27-member bloc.

Poland has rejected the 'double majority' system of voting in the EU draft treaty which it claims gives disproportionate power to larger states such as Germany.

Instead, it is proposing a system which calculates the votes accorded to each EU member based on the square root of its population. Poland claims this system allows for a more equitable distribution of votes between large, medium and small states than the double majority system.
