Kuwaiti Emir reduces death penalty of Filipino maid
Kuwaiti Emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Sunday commuted the death sentence of a Filipino maid convicted of murdering her employer to life imprisonment, after President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo personally pleaded for her clemency, said a presidential spokesman.

The emir also told Arroyo that he would further reduce the sentence of Marilou Ranario if the family of her victim don't oppose, said presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye.

Arroyo made a four-hour stop in Kuwait on her way back home from Europe, to seek the clemency from the Kuwaiti sovereign. She thanked the emir for his compassion and decision, said Bunye.

Ranario was convicted of stabbing to death her female Kuwaiti employer in 2005 for alleged maltreatment.

A Kuwaiti court convicted Ranario of murder and sentenced her to death by hanging.
