'Lebanon missed golden chance to resolve standoff'

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Wednesday that Lebanon has missed a golden chance to solve its political stand off and enhance the Lebanese-Syrian ties by deciding to shun the Arab summit to take place in Syria on March 29.

The Lebanese cabinet decided late Tuesday not to attend Arab summit.

Al-Moallem told reporters that the political crisis in Lebanon must be resolved by the Lebanese political sides, stressing that Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt must cooperate more than other countries to solve the stand off.

Lebanon's parliament Monday postponed for the 17th time a session to elect a new president with the ruling coalition and opposition still unable to agree on the makeup of the next government.

The session was put back to April 22 to allow further negotiations.

Lebanon has been without a president since the presidency term of former Lebanese president Emile Lahoud ended in November 2007.
