Lebanon restores order in jail after prisoner riot
Inmates freed two members of staff taken hostage during a riot, security sources said.
Lebanese authorities restored order at a jail in the northern city of Tripoli on Monday after inmates freed two members of staff taken hostage during a riot, security sources said.
The prisoners ended the standoff when security forces appeared to be on the brink of storming the al-Qubba jail in Tripoli, Lebanon's second largest city. They rioted on Sunday to press demands including an improvement in living conditions.
The prisoners' demands included an improvement in living conditions at al-Qubba prison. Prison authorities were negotiating with the prisoners, the security sources said. There were no reports of casualties.
The riot was the second at a Lebanese prison in less than a year. In April last year, inmates seized seven guards at the Roumiyeh prison, northeast of Beirut.
