Libya is gunning for the Guinness record for the biggest gathering of people with the same name – in this case "Muhammad" – and some of the country's most famous Mohammads are due to attend, AlArabiya reported.

Mohammad, son of Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi and renowned Libyan singer Mohamed Hassan are expected to join a host of other public figures and regular folks named after Islam's revered Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in a bid for the world title.

Libya hopes to beat the United Arab Emirates, which won the Guinness World Record during the 2005 Dubai Shopping Festival after gathering 1,096 Mohammads.

They included a mix of toddlers to fathers and grandfathers. All had to produce an original birth certificate to prove their name.

Prior to Dubai, the previous record for a same-name gathering was created by 375 Marias in Spain in 2003, the BBC reported.

Rumors that each Mohammad would receive a reward of 500 Libyan dinars (423 dollars) had been circulating via cell phone and websites, but officials later denied the claims.

Libya has previously set Guinness World Records for the highest temperature in the world – 50 degrees Celsius (136 Fahrenheit) in 1922 -- and the world's tallest basketball player, Suleiman Ali Nashnush at 245 cm (8.04 feet).

The gathering will be held in the northwestern city of Az-Zawiyah, the fourth largest in Libya.
