Majority of Turks against AK Party closure: Poll
A majority of Turks are against closing the ruling AK Party for alleged anti-secular activities and the party remains voters' first choice, a poll in Milliyet newspaper showed on Monday.

The party, which faces a closure case in the Constitutional Court, has the support of 43.3 percent after the distribution of uncommitted voters, down from 47 percent in its election win last year.

The poll, conducted by A&G Research with 2,403 respondents on June 14-15, showed that 53.3 percent are against closing the AK Party and 37.7 percent believe economic and political chaos will follow if the party is closed.

The poll showed the main opposition parties, Republican People's Party's (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), come far behind the AK Party.

Nearly one third of respondents said they were undecided on their choice of party.

The case at the Constitutional Court -- which is being closely watched by investors who fear months of political uncertainty -- seeks to close down the party and ban 71 political figures, including Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul, from party politics for five years.

If closed down, AK Party members are expected to form a new party, while banned members could run for office as independents if the High Election Board approves their candidacy.

The first hearings in the case begin on Tuesday.
