Mediation impossible between Israel-Syria: Turkish FM

Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said Monday that "when there is a war on the Israeli-Palestinian front, it is impossible to continue with peace talks between Israel and Syria".

Ali Babacan and his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Ali Aboul Gheit held a joint press conference following their tete-a-tete meeting at the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Monday.

Reiterating Turkey's call for an urgent cease-fire in Gaza, Babacan said that "Turkey wishes for weapons to be abandoned and restoration of diplomacy and dialogue in Gaza".

"We have to make a timely warning as the current clashes may not be limited only to Gaza itself," Babacan said.

Asked if a date has been set up for an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Babacan said that the OIC Secretary General is working to organize a meeting of OIC ministers in the first half of January.

In response to a question on whether or not Turkey is thinking of a contact with Hamas, Babacan stressed that "Turkey is a country that holds talks with all sides".

We think that problems should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, Babacan said.

Asked about how Turkey and Egypt will cooperate to put pressure on Israel, Aboul Gheit said that "Turkey and Egypt are two prominent countries of the region. The two countries have the power to influence developments in the region".

"As Turkey and Egypt, we believe that we can play a serious role," Gheit said.

"We have done what we could to stop the process that was leading towards armed clashes. Turkey's and Egypt's international power is sufficient to realize many results," Gheit said.

Reminded about some negative evaluations on Egypt's attitude towards the incidents in Gaza, Gheit stressed that "this situation is an open declaration of war against Egypt by various tv stations and individuals. This is a war declared on the Egyptian people. The people of Egypt do not accept this declaration of war against itself and will do whatever is possible to resist this war".

A leader of Hezbollah on Sunday made a call to millions of Egyptians to go on to the streets so that the border gate between Gaza and Egypt gets opened.
