Egyptian-Palestinian delegations agree to postpone issue of long-term truce

Meeting of Egyptian-Palestinian delegations ends

The Egyptian and Palestinian delegations currently meeting in Cairo agreed on Monday to postpone the issue of concluding a long-term truce between the Palestinians and Israel until the new PA government was formed.

Ezzet Al-Resheq, political bureau member of the Hamas Movement, said that the Egyptian delegation tabled the idea of such a truce, but both teams agreed that it should be postponed till after the new cabinet was formed.

A Hamas delegation led by Khaled Mishaal, political bureau chairman, last night met with Omar Suleiman, Egyptian intelligence chief, in a meeting that went into a late hour.

Suleiman conveyed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's congratulations to Hamas over its legislative election victory, according to Resheq.

For his part, Suleiman affirmed that his country does not interfere in Palestinian internal affairs and denied news reports that his government had asked Hamas to recognize Israel and shun "violence" in order to be able to form the new government.

He further urged continuation of the Arab assistance to the PA in face of western calls for draining such aid.
