Up to 22.72 million people were displaced or left homeless and 1,224 hectares of farmland destroyed as a result of wide-scale flooding in China this year, the Chinese state press reported Wednesday.

As of June 15, the death toll in China from the floods has climbed to 128, the People's Daily said, citing statistics from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

The floods have also caused an overall economic loss of CNY 8.92 billion (USD 1.14 billion), the daily said.

The situation has been especially devastating since June, due to serious flooding in southern China.

A population of 14.24 million people has become victims of flooding, and the government has earmarked CNY 100 million (USD 13.1 million) in emergency relief funds.
