More Turkish provinces announce budget deficit in 2009

Only twelve out of 81 provinces in Turkey managed to run surplus budgets in 2009 as the fallout from a global economic recession has forced the figure to drop from fifteen in 2008.

The three biggest metropolitan provinces, Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir as well as Antalya, Bursa, Hatay, Mersin, Kirklareli, Kocaeli, Mugla, Tekirdag and Zonguldak, contributed to the Treasury more than they had received from it.

Istanbul returned 8 Turkish liras for every one lira and Turkey's biggest commercial hub received 10.3 billion TL, paying back to the Treasury 80.9 billion TL to become the province with the largest amount of contributions to the national treasury.

Turkey's southeastern province of Hakkari ran the biggest individual budget deficit in Turkey with 724 million TL.
