Morocco starts work on northern naval base

King Mohammed VI, supreme commander of the armed forces, presided over the start of the project that is due to be completed in three years at a cost of 1.39 billion dirham (122 million euros, 188 million dollars).

The domestic MAP news agency said the facility at Ksar Seghir would be the "cornerstone" for Moroccan naval operations in an area that includes the Straits of Gibraltar and the new Tangiers-Med container terminal.

Morocco's principal naval base is in Casablanca, on the North Atlantic coast.
