Most German support Afghan withdrawal

No date has been set for the withdrawal of German troops from Afghanistan, a German official said Wednesday.

The German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung told ZDF national television that it is not possible to specify a date for withdrawal at this point.

He noted that the German troops deployed to Afghanistan still have a long way.

Germany army experts have trained over 35,000 Afghan soldiers to date, Jung added. In total, the experts plan to train a total of 70,000 soldiers.

The EU Defense Ministers have decided to increase the number of experts training the local forces from 40 to 160 in the near future, he said.

Jung added he will be attending the funerals of the German soldiers killed in Northern Afghanistan last Saturday.

A poll by Forsa, a German research center, shows that 63 percent of Germans polled were for a German withdrawal and 35 percent were against.

A suicide bombing in Afghanistan left three German soldiers dead last Saturday.
