Musharraf-deposed Judges to be restored in 30 days

Pakistani leaders finally decided to restore judges including the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chauhdary, within a deadline of 30 days, official sources said.

The leaders of two coalition partners at the political center Tuesday held a crucial meeting to finally resolve the issue of judges' restoration, who were deposed by President Musharraf during his emergency rule in November of last year.

Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leader, Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman, Asif Ali Zardari, met to discuss the restoration of deposed judges issue at Zardari house. The meeting was also attended by Awami National Party (ANP) leader Asfandyar Wali.

The three leaders finally decided to restore judges including the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chauhdary, within a deadline of 30 days, official sources told KUNA.

They decided to not include the restoration of judges in the constitutional package and reinstate them through an executive order, said sources.

There is a possibility that soon after the reinstatement, the judges may take up suo motu notices on steps taken on and after Musharraf proclaimed emergency on November 3, 2007, followed by an interim order facilitating the restoration of the judges of the superior courts to the position of Nov 2, according to a report of daily Dawn.
