Musharraf pulls out of Afghan talks
The Pakistani president has pulled out of a peace meeting with tribal elders in Afghanistan.

Pervez Musharraf told Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, that he would send Shaukat Aziz, the prime minister, in his place.

The council meeting, or jirga, was due to start on Thursday and had been brokered by the US president.

The jirga brings together tribal leaders from the mountain region bordering the two countries, areas known for their support of the Taliban movement and al-Qaeda fighters.

The meeting was seen as an opportunity to develop a co-operative strategy between both nations on the matter.

However, the leaders of two of Pakistan's seven tribal regions, North and South Waziristan, have already announced they will be boycotting the talks.
