The Union of Islamic Communities in Italy (UCOII), the largest in the country, is organising the first ever course on mosque management for its officials.
The seminar, opening in the northern city of Bologna on Saturday, will be the first of a number of courses in the next few months dedicated to the financial management and organisation of Islamic centres and mosques and transparency issues in relations with local institutions and is aimed at forming the new leaders of Italy's Muslim communities, UCOII says.
"Many accuse mosques of not being transparent and failing to publish their budgets and our objective is to train new leaders able to make Islamic centres more efficient and transparent in their management and relations with local institutions," the group's spokesman Ezzedin el-Zerfi told Adnkronos International.
UCOII also plans to organise courses for imams on the content of sermons in relation to Italy's culture and history.
There are approximately one million Muslims in Italy and UCOII is linked to dozens of mosques across the country.
