A group of Muslim scholars issued a statement here on Thursday, denouncing all types of violent activities in Iraq and elsewhere as alien to Islam, Emirates News Agency reported.

Stressing the sanctity of human life, the Muslim scholars expressed in the statement their extreme concern over the alarming scale of killings of innocent people in Iraq.

"The killing of innocents, the destruction of mosques, places of worship, homes, and the desecration of the dead in Iraq and elsewhere violate that which is sacred," the statement denounced.

The scholars also urge the Muslim community, political leaders, preachers, all concerned parties and the media "to uphold their responsibility by resolving to bring about an end to the crisis".

"We must not create an opportunity for our enemies to foster conflict and further hostilities," stressed the statement.

Four apparently coordinated suicide car bombings hit two villages near Iraq's Mosul late Tuesday, leaving some 500 dead and375 others injured.

The attack recorded the deadliest incidents of its kind since the Iraq war broke out in 2003
