'Muslim tortured for 'war on terror' in Philippines'
Kaharudin Talib has been arrested illegally, tortured and forced to say he was part of Jemaah Islamiyah, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

Zainudin Malang, lawyer for Talib, said this was part of a campaign of abuse against Muslims being conducted in the name of the war on terror.

"Once again a member of the Muslim community was arrested without warrant," Malang said in a statement.

"Once again someone (Muslim) was subjected to physical abuse to force him to admit to a supposed terrorist plot."

Police have described Talib as a 'bomb maker'. Originally from Mindanao, he was arrested in the centre of Taguig, on the outskirts of Manila last week. He is being held in detention at Camp Aguinaldo.

Police claim he was preparing an attack and that explosive materials were "found in his apartment."

But Malang explained that Talib was in Manila for work and that the bomb had probably been "planted by the police."

He said there was no proof and the bomb had been found in Talib's apartment after police had asked other residents to leave for a few minutes.

Malang, is a member of the Muslim legal aid foundation and defender of Islamic rights in the Philippines, a country where security forces are often accused of abuse.

Talib's brother said he was only a tricycle driver waiting for the results of his application for an overseas job.

Abdul Basit from Taguig City, said his brother was innocent and could not have been involved in plans to launch attacks in Manila.
