The Night of Forgiveness (Beraat), which is observed the night between the 14th and 15th days of Sha'ban -- the eighth month of the Hijra calendar -- will be commemorated by the Muslim world tonight.
Religious Affairs Directorate head Ali Bardakoğlu, in a statement published to celebrate the Night of Forgiveness, said, "With every passing day, acquiring religious understandings from correct and reliable sources is important in the maintenance of individual and social peace as well as in maintaining the religious education that adds to our spiritual and moral development."
Bardakoğlu stated that the night of Aug. 27 will be celebrated as the Night of Forgiveness, Compassion and Remission. He also characterized the event as a period when Muslims expect to be purified by God from their sins and a reminder that the month of Ramadan, known as the month of Koran, is near.
"Our exalted religion, Islam, aims to perfect human characteristics and provide an inner peace, increasing self-esteem and developing healthy relations with one's self, one's environment, and God. Life and the hereafter, when coupled, bring harmony to faith, and wisdom, balancing the material and spiritual aspects of life," Bardakoğlu said.
