Myanmar court rejects Suu Kyi appeal

Myanmar's Supreme Court on Friday rejected an appeal by detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi against her house arrest, diplomats said.

Suu Kyi was sentenced last August to an additional 18 months under house arrest after being convicted of breaking the terms of her detention by sheltering an uninvited American man who swam to her lakeside villa.

She had initially been sentenced to three years in prison with hard labour, but that sentence was immediately commuted to 18 months of house arrest by Senior General Than Shwe, the head of Myanmar's ruling military.

"The judge turned it down. He read out the decision but he didn't offer any reason for the rejection," her lawyer, Nyan Win, told reporters, who were barred from the courtroom.

Nyan Win said he planned to lodge an appeal against the decision with Myanmar's chief justice, the one remaining channel for Suu Kyi to seek her freedom.

"We will take it to an appellate court as soon as we know the details of the verdict," he added.
