NATO mine hunter ships in Turkey's Izmir

Six mine hunter/sweepers of Standing NATO Mine Counter Measure Group-2 arrived in Turkish western province of Izmir on Monday.

The commander of the ships, Patrizio Rahamino, visited Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Aziz Kocaoglu and Deputy Governor Sait Topoglu, and briefed them about their activities.

Standing NATO Mine Counter Measure Group-2 was set up in 1999 to sweep mines in international waters and give training against mine trafficking. The Group consists two ships from Italy, and one each from Turkey, Greece, Spain and Germany.

The ships will stay in Izmir till September 10.
