The newly named Turkish judge of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) will officially took office on Monday after being sworn in, The New Anatolian said.

At its meeting in January, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), selected Prof. Dr. Isil Karakas of the Galatasaray University as the new judge of Turkey at the Court.

She received 136 of the 185 votes. Karakas will take over from Riza Turmen, who held the position since 1998, and will be the first female judge from Turkey at the ECHR.

Karakas, a lecturer at Galatasaray University in Istanbul who has worked on European Union law and International Human Rights law, will remain in office for the next six years.
