Nigeria's cabinet backs VPJonathan's presidency

Nigeria's cabinet on Wednesday accepted parliament's decision to make Vice President Goodluck Jonathan acting head of state in the absence of President Umaru Yar'Adua, the information minister said.

The decision had been widely expected although some of the ministers had previously held out against transferring executive powers to Jonathan.

"Council accepts the resolution of the National Assembly that the vice president becomes acting president and commander-in-chief," Information Minister Dora Akunyili told reporters after a cabinet meeting presided over by Jonathan.
