The Russian government is not considering any plan to restructure corporate debt and is not in talks with foreign banks on the issue, a government spokesman said on Tuesday.
The comments followed a report in Japan's Nikkei business daily that Russian banks had asked the government for help in restructuring $400 billion of corporate foreign debt. The report sent the euro tumbling.
"There are no such plans in the government. Information regarding any talks with foreign banks on the subject of restructuring does not reflect reality," spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters.
"Nikkei's information is of completely distorted character," the spokesman said.
"The government of the Russian Federation does not plan to consider the issue of restructuring the corporate debt of Russian banks and companies," Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin told Reuters.
