Obama to Republicans: 'not pretend on insurance regulation'

President Barack Obama on Thursday urged Republicans "not to pretend" that any form of health insurance regulation would have terrible consequences for Americans.

Obama, hosting a bipartisan summit on healthcare reform, was responding to a complaint from U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor that the healthcare overhaul being pushed by the president and his fellow Democrats would mean excessive government intrusion.

"Let's not pretend that any form of regulation of the insurance market is some onerous burden that's going to result in terrible things happening to consumers," Obama said.
