The funeral for a prominent Iranian cleric, Ayatollah Ali Meshkini, was held in Tehran Wednesday.
The official IRNA agency said the 83-year-old ayatollah was the head of the Experts Assembly and the Friday prayers leader in the holy city of Qom.
He also had written many books on Islamic jurisprudence and on Islam in general.
Meshkini died Monday after a long hospital stay for pulmonary disease, the agency said, The Telegraph reported in London.

A number of government officials participated in the funeral, which was covered live by some Iranian radio and television networks. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was among the speakers.
The body of the late ayatollah was to be carried to Qom, south of Tehran, where he will be buried.
Qom is a center of Shiite Islam.
