OIC says Dakar-Port Sudan railway project to link East -West of Africa

Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, said the recently launched Dakar-Port Sudan railway project aimed at bridging East and West of Africa.

Ihsanoglu told AA that the 10km long railway project stretching from East to West would connect Africa with the Atlantic, the Red Sea, Middle East and Asia.

He said the political will behind the project was confirmed during the First Ministerial Meeting on the Project at Khartoum, Sudan on 10 December 2009.

Ihsanoglu said cooperation activities carried by OIC in Turkey and Islamic countries increased the trade potentials adding that the OIC Economic Summit hosted in Turkey and Chaired by Turkish President Abdullah Gul opened new horizons.

He said the preferential trade protocol entered into force in a short period of time like five years noting that they were exerting efforts to enforce the Rules of Origin protocol. He said new projects aiming to create common tarde areas and boosting cross border trade, were on the way.
