The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has placed the topic honor killings, efforts to eliminate violence against women and providing more opportunities to women in social life on its agenda.

OIC to Discuss Issue of Honor Killings

The OIC will organize a Turkey-proposed conference entitled "The Role of Women in Developing Member Countries of the OIC," to discuss the problems women experience in Muslim countries.

The conference will mainly focus on eliminating violence against women, honor killings, improving female employment rates and increasing the number of women at the decision-making level.

The conference, which will be the first OIC meeting to be held at a ministerial level, will also emphasize that honor killings are not allowed in Islam.

Turkish Minister of State for Women and Family Nimet Cubukcu will represent Turkey at the conference.

The conference will be co-organized by Turkey's Directorate General on the Status and the Problems of Women, the Turkish Foreign Ministry and the Secretariat-General of OIC.

Ministers for women and family affairs of Muslim countries will attend the conference. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had participated in an anti-honor killing campaign film, was also invited to the conference.

The meeting will be held in four sessions and focus on the following topics: eliminating violence against women, developing strategies and national policies to increase female employment and to prevent poverty, increasing the number of women at decision-making levels and increasing education levels among women.

At the end of the meeting, the OIC member countries will prepare a report to be approved by the attending ministers.
