Over 30,000 Ossetian refugees flee to Russia

More than 30,000 refugees from Georgia's breakaway province of South Ossetia have fled the fighting there to Russia, Russian government chief of staff Sergei Sobyanin was quoted as saying on Saturday.

"In the past 36 hours more than 30,000 people have crossed the border," Sobyanin said at a meeting chaired by President Dmitry Medvedev, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

"In reality we have a humanitarian catastrophe."
