PACE in Albania efforts to end political stalemate

Head of a parliamentary assembly of Europe's top human rights watchdog was in Tirana, Albania, on Monday to seek ways to end a political stalemate -- a boycott of parliament now in its sixth month.

Mevlut Cavusoglu, president of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, held separate meetings with Albanian President Bamir Topi, Prime Minister Sali Berisha and Parliament Speaker Jozefina Topalli.

The opposition Socialist Party (SP) has boycotted the parliament since last September, refusing to participate in any legislative work to protest alleged fraud in country's general elections in June 2009.

Cavusoglu is set to meet Edi Rama, the SP's leader, later today and hold a press conference over his contacts.

The Albanian president brokered last week a meeting between Berisha and Rama in a bid to resolve the deadlock but the two leaders failed to reach a compromise.
