Pakistan to hold presidential elections in 2 months

Presidential elections in Pakistan would be held between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15 this year and the present assemblies would elect the president, Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said.

This would be followed by the general elections when the present assemblies complete their term on Nov. 15 this year, Aziz told a news conference on his return from the Afghan capital of Kabul, where he represented Pakistan in the joint council of tribal elders.

To a question, Aziz said Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf was totally eligible to contest elections again on expiry of his term.

Replying to another question, Aziz said that elections were held under the auspices of the Election Commission and the government was facilitating its work.

About emergency, Aziz said that he had sent no advice to the president for proclamation of the emergency in the country.

Aziz said that the issue was discussed between him and the president but it was found that there was no need for the time being for such an action.

He said that the government wanted the political process to move towards the right direction so as to create conducive atmosphere for timely conduct of free, fair and transparent general elections.
